It's friggin hot outside, and I need no excuse to stay in and read a book. ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ
This month's diverse reads are mostly fantasy along with a speculative fiction short story collection and a dark academia that looks truly terrifying. These are books by people with marginalized identities, thereby erasing all shame in extending your TBR and adding more books to your shelf. As a library nerd, I'm pushing my holds list to the max.

Birth of a Dynasty by Chinaza Bado - July 29, 2025

This one looks super interesting. The publisher describes it as "the political intrigue of She Who Became the Sun with the gorgeous world-building of Children of Blood and Bone." I loved She Who Became the Sun, and from the description this book looks equally brutal and cunning so this is going directly to my TBR.
Birth of a Dynasty launches an epic fantasy trilogy set in the richly imagined world of Ahkebulin, where power, prophecy, and vengeance collide. After the brutal destruction of his noble house, M’Kuru Mukundi hides among his enemies, biding his time for revenge. Meanwhile, Zikora Nnamani, a warrior-in-training marked by prophecy, is thrust into a deadly political game at the royal court. As giants roam and magic stirs, two unlikely heroes must navigate betrayal and destiny to challenge a corrupt dynasty—no matter the cost.
Human Rites by Juno Dawson - July 1, 2025

In Human Rites, the explosive finale to Her Majesty’s Royal Coven, the coven faces its darkest hour. As Lucifer prepares to unleash the prophecy of Satanis, each witch must confront grief, betrayal, and impossible choices. With one of their own lost in time and another carrying a deadly secret, the fate of magic—and the world—hangs in the balance. Fierce, emotional, and unrelenting, this is a powerful showdown between destiny and defiance.
The Library at Hellebore by Cassandra Khaw - July 22, 2025

In The Library at Hellebore, Cassandra Khaw delivers a razor-sharp, diabolical twist on dark academia. When Alessa Li is kidnapped and enrolled at an elite school for world-ending prodigies, she quickly learns the price of survival. After a brutal graduation massacre, she and a few classmates are trapped in the school’s library—forced to offer a nightly human sacrifice to keep monstrous faculty at bay. Gruesome, gripping, and utterly unforgiving, this is dark academia with teeth.
Bright Dead Star by Caitlín R. Kiernan - July 31, 2025

Bright Dead Star is a haunting collection of twenty-five tales that plunge into the surreal, the unsettling, and the cosmic. From alien horrors to twisted human desires, Caitlín R. Kiernan crafts stories that blur the boundaries of genre, sanity, and reality. With eerie seascapes, monstrous secrets, and visions of deep time, this collection is a masterclass in weird fiction—bold, unflinching, and unforgettable.
The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - July 15, 2025

In The Bewitching, Silvia Moreno-Garcia weaves a chilling multigenerational tale of witchcraft and mystery. As 1990s grad student Minerva investigates a forgotten horror writer, she uncovers eerie parallels between her life, her great-grandmother’s tales of early 1900s Mexico, and a vanished woman from the 1930s. As she uncovers more of the mystery, she suspects the malicious force behind the disappearance still lingers in the halls of the university. Spanning decades and haunted by a sinister force, this atmospheric novel explores how the past never truly stays buried—and how witchcraft may be more than just legend.
The Memory of the Ogisi by Moses Ose Utomi - July 15, 2025

This is a series I need to pick up. I keep seeing it bouncing around and haven't squeezed it in yet.
In the gripping conclusion to the Forever Desert series, The Memory of the Ogisi follows historian Ethike as he journeys into the mysterious desert to uncover the truth behind the origins of his prosperous city. Driven by love and a thirst for knowledge, Ethike’s search for the Lost Tomb of Osi leads to revelations that challenge everything he thought he knew—and awaken a buried power hungry for vengeance. A powerful tale of history, identity, and resistance.
Happy reading!
